Biggers Funeral Home, a second generation firm located in Lake Worth, Texas, north of downtown Fort Worth, Texas, had been in their original location for many years until urban growth and highway expansion created operational problems for the original facility. The Texas Highway Department needed a significant portion of their property frontage, and traffic conditions were becoming difficult and dangerous for the business to continue at the original location. A new, more visible corner location was selected in a very active area of the City and JST was hired to design a new and larger “state of the art” facility.
The new facility was planned for maximum visibility and access on the corner site. The building was placed facing the corner of the property at approximately a 45° angle. Entrances and exits are located on both side streets which border the property.
Our firm developed an 18,000 sq. ft. single-story plan in a comfortable French Country Architectural Style. The funeral home was planned with a dramatic high ceiling lobby centered on a front porte cochere entrance. The 28’ x 30’ lobby has a large central reception desk with comfortable seating areas on either side. A business office and arrangement center opens up to the lobby with side hallways leading to a formal chapel on the right and visitation chapels on the left. The arrangement center provides three arrangement offices, a cremation products area, and 30’ x 30’ showroom. The showroom accommodates full size and partial size caskets. Public toilets are also strategically placed in the side hall, and accommodate the formal chapel.
The formal chapel seats 280 people in pews and also provides for a family seating area for 30 on the right side of the Chancel. A family gathering suite with private toilet also services the family seating area. The family seating room utilizes a sliding wall system to allow the room to be converted into another stateroom if required. A front vestibule with a dramatic bay window and half-glass viewing windows work to provide entrance privacy and sound buffering for the chapel space. Late arrivals or crying children may be accommodated in this area without disturbance to the Chapel Service. This space also provides for additional overflow seating for 30 to 40 people if necessary.
Off of the left side of the main lobby, there is a public lounge as well as a children’s area with TV/DVD. The lounge has access to an outdoor “smoking” patio through French doors. The lounge is also adjacent to a spacious visitation lobby for four adjacent staterooms. One pair of staterooms utilizes a movable wall system to allow for size and configuration flexibility.
A service / load-in 5 car garage is at the rear of the building and is configured to provide load-in access to a two-station preparation area and separate dressing area with laundry. A one- bedroom apartment is also provided at the back of the facility and has separate outdoor entrance as well as an entrance to the funeral home.
JST Interiors worked with the Owners to develop a very comfortable traditional interior décor which fit seamlessly with the French Country Architecture. A light color scheme for walls, floors, and furniture, working in concert with the large window areas created a very inviting and informal residential atmosphere.
